Joining the Army.
Had I done so at the age of eighteen, or even after college at twenty-one, the risk would have been relatively small, as new into my career life as I was. However, I joined at the age of thirty, after over eight years building a career as a carpenter, which, incidentally, I enjoyed very much. I nearly washed out, spending six weeks in a medical recovery unit between basic training classes, recovering from stress fractures in my knees and ankles.
What ensued was a twenty-one-year military career, spanning five duty stations and six deployments, yielding better job options upon retirement, a solid pension, and VA disability payments.
I came out at the age of fifty-one a little beat up, but with no regrets.
Best regards,
Julian
