Freedom

Daily writing prompt
What does freedom mean to you?

Freedom means different things to different people.

Is it happiness? Not necessarily. The U. S. Constitution guarantees us the right to Life, Liberty, and the PURSUIT of Happiness, but not happiness itself. We are actually quite free to be unhappy, if we so choose.

Freedom could be the ability to speak freely in the public forum without repercussions. That freedom only exists in a limited sense, in a very few places. In the U. S. and some other places, we can speak freely without repercussions from our government, but we still face backlash from the rest of the public and our employers.

Is it the ability to do whatever we want, whenever we want, to whomever we want? Definitely not! I refer to the old adage that your liberty ends at the tip of my nose. My rights should not infringe on your rights, or anyone else’s, and vice versa.

IMHO, freedom is a nebulous and hard-to-define term. What do you think?
